About the exhibition:
Stop & Smell The Flowers is a solo visual art exhibition created by Brittany Bouyer. This body of work is new, vibrant and fully influenced by her relationship to new motherhood and her daily life with her daughter.
Brittany is an illustrator most known for her surface patterns and illustrations used on products throughout her online shop and in stores around the country. Her work often includes themes of florals, activism, femininity and empowerment.
This new body of work is an ode to mothering a young daughter who is constantly reminding her parents to slow down and notice, to find joy in the simple quiet magic our environment provides for us: flowers, bees, butterflies, pattern motifs like argyle or stripes plus animals we see in books.
With a huge rise in usage of AI and becoming bombarded with heavy news everyday, Brittany has created this series of work to become more tactile and move away from the digital processes. Not only as a form of nervous system regulation, but also as a form of resistance to the modern times.
Each of the 20+ pieces of original work are made of mixed media varying from embroidery, sewing, painting, inks and beyond. This process was an intentional choice to honor what her three year old has taught her: the beauty of play and exploration. These works invite the viewer to slow down, look closer, and quite literally, stop and smell the flowers. Every piece includes some of her daughters help and the color pink as it has been the recent "favorite" for everything, helping Brittany freeze time with the preciousness that is a growing child.
Each piece has a unique description relating to her days spent with her daughter at home drinking tea, watching bunnies in the yard, walks through the neighborhood spotting flowers. The simple moments of everyday life, capturing the sensory world of her child.
